CoordEgy’s RALEIGH EVENT DJ kicks off Memorial Day weekend and the summer party season by rocking Nub Live 2009 in Raleigh!

When asked back in March, 2009, by Stacey Dyer, Owner and Creative Director of Triple Frog, LLC if CoordEgy was interested in providing Disc Jockey servies for this event, and if so, could we “Turn it up to eleven” with HIGH Energy Rock ‘n’ Roll music from the 70’s to today ? ? ?

To that we responded with an emphatic “No Prob-lem-O!”

What is Nub Live? Nub Live 2009 is a 50 city Rock Concert style series of events being held at various cigar venues across the country featuring: personal appearances by Nub creator Sam Leccia; whiskey tasting with liquour sponsor Jack Daniel’s; and white-hot entertainment provided by local bands and Disc Jockeys. And if that isn’t enough . . .
to really set the mood, Car & Bike enthusiasts (a.k.a. gear heads) are encouraged to come show off their rides in the parking lot of these events to create the ultimate rock concert, car and bike show experience.

But just what is a “Nub” you may ask? Nub is the brand of cigar created by Sam Leccia for the Oliva Cigar Company. As Sam explained to us, he created this cigar because he wanted a cigar that “cut right to the chase” with flavor and smoking satisfaction. A typical cigar takes a little while for the flavors to develop and mature – usually not until a third of the way through the cigar. A Nub is shorter and stockier than other cigars and with its uniquely blended fillers and wrappers; it delivers that desired effect only moments after being lit.

This year’s Nub Event in Raleigh was held at Empire Cigars (formerly in the location of Capital City Cigars) at the Harvest Oaks shopping plaza on May 23rd, 2009 at 1:00pm.

What a great way for Raleigh Event DJ to kick off the Memorial Day weekend and the traditional start of the summer event and party season.

The day was about 85 degrees with medium humidity. The skies were partly cloudy which made for a nice event because that kept the temperature bearable.

DJ Bradley-J – Programming director, spinning the discs, cranking jams and calling all the shots
Diane – the Special Assistant to the Entertainment Expert. Fetchin’ tunes and holding it all together behind the scenes.
Isaac – Roadie, Rigger and Best Boy. Luggin gear, snaking cables & performing sound quality control.
Tori – Project assistant and roadie supervisor. Keeping Issac in line and photo journaling the event.

Since the cigar shop was just a tad too small for guests, patrons and entertainment, the DJ was set up in a 15ft x 30ft open sided tent provided by a regular shop patron named Jeff – which was conveniently set-up just outside the cigar shop overlooking the area where all the cars and bikes were being shown. Rain showers could be expected at any time throughout the day and the tent provided excellent shelter from both sun and rain.

The show started promptly at 1:00pm. DJ Bradley-J, being of Massachusetts origin, naturally found pleasure in firing things up right out of the gate with the song Smokin’ by the band Boston!

But being born and raised a “Yank” doesn’t bias Brad’s taste in music one bit. Throughout the 4-hour performance, Brad gave “props” to that which he now calls home with a healthy dose of Southern Rock: Lynard Skynard, Molly Hatchet, The Allman Brothers Band, Ted Nugent, Charlie Daniels, ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughan just to name a few.

Knowing well power of music and how it can affect action at an event, Brad reached into his DJ bag-of-tricks with the thinking “if we play-it – it will come,” and proceeded to cue up Bruce Springsteen’s Pink Cadillac and he pumped it out of both Mackie SRM450 powered speakers with passion, intensity and enthusiasm. But alas, that iconic classic of American automotive prominence was apparently beyond the range of DJ Bradley-J’s music-telepathy to hear the shout-out.

But let’s not forget that this was supposed to be a car AND BIKE show. Not too much time had passed before some really fine sleds rumbled on to the lot. Now, if you were the DJ, how would you recognize and thank them for their attendance? Why of course you would play the universally recognized bikers anthem: Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf — but not just any version. Any DJ worth their salt will show their respect by cranking the “Easy Rider” version — it’s only right!

While things were rockin’ outside, inside, Sam Leccia was rolling fresh cigars, telling the Nub story and joking and mingling with the customers and guests. One of the event’s really cool take-away incentives was the “backstage kits” that you got with a purchase of a box of Nub Cigars. The kit includes: a backstage pass, a limited edition
cigar that Sam created just for the occasion, a hat, a shirt, a cutter, guitar picks, stickers, temporary tattoos, patches, matches, and some Jack Daniels items.

Back outside, Brad and the Raleigh Event DJ crew were energizing the audience and playing all the right tunes because by the end of the afternoon, a number of fans had staked out their territory in and around the parking lot like camps at a Woodstock festival. Small open-sided tents were being pitched and the fans were chil-laxing in their folding lawn chairs, sipping beverages they pulled out of a cooler on the ground between them, tugging on a freshly rolled Nub and rocking the day away like they were at a tailgate party – minus the tailgates.

Being your typical summer afternoon in North Carolina, pop-up thunderstorms are common. So with the thunderheads beginning to form and the clouds ominously darkening, DJ Bradley-J once again reached into his bag of tricks and symbolically connected the watery aspects of possible rain to the smoldering cigars with Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water” (Made In Japan live version of course) as the last song. And if y’all recall, at that song’s end is the recorded sound of the audience cheering and clapping. How fitting that Brad’s new fans all stood, clapped and cheered with the music and even held up their lighters for him just like they would at any rock concert!
